Clinical need
Strokes and heart attacks are the most common cause of death in the world
Strokes are usually caused by the rupture of a plaque (narrowing of a blood vessel)
Some plaques are stable, but others are more likely to rupture and cause a stroke
There is currently no clinical tool to assess how dangerous a certain plaque will be
Sub-optimal treatment
Arterial plaques (narrowing of blood vessels) are currently evaluated by their size. But this does not provide enough information about how dangerous they are. The tissue composition in particular is a crucial piece of information for an optimal treatment.
